Even though the town of Brine is a figment of my imagination, it’s based in the Skagit Valley in Washington State.
Black Cat Series tropes:
Black Cats, Of Course!
Other than an adorable black cat who’s always by Queenie’s side, there are people black cats too. What’s the person equivalent of a black cat, you ask?
Black cat: A person who does not fit in to any group. The strong silent type, always observing and analyzing situations before getting involved. May have a lot to say but does not say it. Often settles problems alone and is more than capable of it. For the few who get to know him/her a close and loyal friend they will find. A black cat may seem shy to some but make no mistake, he/she is merely bored and is thinking of greater things. They may not understand your affection toward them, but will always return friendship. A black cat is extremely good at figuring people out, as a result black cats fall in love easy after accepting all your faults and your trust.
Redemption
Both main characters are looking for redemption in this series. Queenie wants to redeem herself and her family in the eyes of the townspeople, especially with the help of her app. Mercer wants redemption in the form of forgiveness from Queenie.
Family
Because the whole town of Brine hates the Beanes, they’ve gotta stick together! In Queenie’s family, you’ll find two ridiculously in love parents and siblings who fiercely protect one another.
Creepy But Cozy
This series is a little less cute than other Eryn Scott books, but still just as cozy. It’s like the feeling of walking through a cold, dark graveyard at night, but then getting home and wrapping yourself up in a warm blanket with cocoa while you watch the rain out your window.
Scooby Doo Vibes!
While there are a few small paranormal oddities mentioned in each Black Cat Investigation book (a psychic vision that actually turns out to be correct, the possibility of ghosts, could a werewolf be responsible?) these are non-paranormal books and will always include a totally normal explanation in the end. Think of a Scooby Doo episode where it seems like a mummy, werewolf, witch, or zombie is the culprit, but then they take off the mask and it’s just Mr. Jinkins! That’s the same vibe in this series.

Playlist
Dark and desperate are the vibes with this series! Sleep Token is my go to when I’m writing in Queenie and Mercer’s POVs.
Series Plans
At this point, I have 9 books planned in the series, but we’ll see how it goes! Who knows, maybe I’ll come up with many, many more!
They will be out in audio starting in 2026!
